How It Works

Crop factor describes how a smaller sensor sees a narrower field of view compared to full frame (35mm). A 1.5x crop makes a 35mm lens frame like a 52.5mm on full frame. The crop factor also affects equivalent aperture for depth of field (multiply f-stop by crop factor) and noise performance (multiply ISO by crop factor squared). This is why full frame cameras produce shallower DOF and cleaner high-ISO images.
