How It Works
Depth of field is the range of distance in a photo that appears acceptably sharp. Three factors control DOF: aperture (wider = shallower), focal length (longer = shallower), and distance (closer = shallower). The circle of confusion (CoC) defines what counts as "sharp" and varies by sensor size. Full frame cameras have a larger CoC (0.029mm) than crop sensors, meaning equivalent framing gives shallower DOF on full frame.
