How It Works

Exposure compensation tells your camera to intentionally over- or under-expose from what the meter recommends. Positive values (+EV) make the image brighter, negative values make it darker. Common uses: +1 to +2 for snow or white backgrounds (meters try to make them gray), -1 for dark subjects. Each full stop doubles or halves the amount of light reaching the sensor.
